Young Living Essential Oils: Trial and Error on Uses from a Skeptics Point of View

I rarely believe in fads.  I have to try it to believe it.  I have many friends who are “oily” people.  They use Young Living, DoTerra, Essential Oils Exchange, Native American Nutritionals and so on and so forth.

I had been reading things on facebook and, no offense to those of my friends that sell these products, I just assumed that you were touting its greatness in order to sell.  I sold Thirty One, so I know how that is and I don’t begrudge you at all.

That is one reason why I would scan over the posts, comments or messages were made.  I would just chuckle inside and move on….and then, my sister called.  She has dipped her toe in a more “hippy” lifestyle over the past few years.  It started with my nephew and his belly issues….then it was applied to acne of some of her children and her ginormous plantars wart on her foot.  I get so tickled with her “finds” and new, more holistic approaches because…well, let’s be honest, I am the hippy of the family.  I *always* think outside of the box..march the beat of my own drum, and so on and so forth.

I decided to talk to a close friend because she is all about the “oily” lifestyle.  She encouraged me that I do not have to sell anything and the bottles last for a while, so they maintenance of replenishing my stock is financially doable.

I ordered the advanced kit (for the life of me, I can’t think of what the technical name is called…clearly, I don’t sell these products).  I wanted the diffuser.  The diffuser came with the kit that I ordered.  My goal was to please my husband.  He is always telling me that the house smells of dog, feet, sweat, boy, etc.  I get so sick of it because I work so hard.  I keep the house clean.  I use candles, scentsy things, glade air fresheners and nothing has worked.

My sister coveted LOL.

I have been using oils for a few months now.  When I first got my kit, I fired up my diffuser.  When Big Daddy came home, he didn’t complain, at all, about the smell in the house.  He said that it actually smells good and he wondered what I had been using.  Score.

These are a few of things that I have discovered.  I’m all about honesty and whether or not the oil works or doesn’t work.  My first BIG thing I used was Lavender.  Jude ripped off his toenail and it would not stop bleeding.  My first reaction would be to grab peroxide, triple antibiotic cream and a bandaid.  This time, I grabbed the lavender.  I put ONE drop on his profusely bleeding toe (much to his chagrin) and it INSTANTLY stopped bleeding.  I was shocked…plus his toe smelled like a flower instead of stinky boy 🙂

Here is what I have used (I have only bought two oils outside of the starter kit…Cedarwood and Oregano).

Snoring: Valor.  I put one drop on Big Daddy’s right big toe.  Dudes (and Dudettes)….I thought I had killed my husband.  I sat up, most of the night, putting my finger under his nose because he was not snoring.  He was on his back, people.  Normally, he sounds like a freight train.  He sucks my hairs up his nostrils every single night for almost 22 years.  He.  Does.  Not.  Snore.

Scratch/Bleeding:  Lavender, one drop….bleeding stop, scratch healed up in about 5 hrs.

Allergies:  I diffuse lavender, lemon, and peppermint.  I rub lavender behind ears, on wrists.  I rub lemon behind ears and on wrists.  Peppermint, I rub under the nose and on the shirt.  I also put some on a tissue to inhale it.  Has done really well…I’m not *near* as pathetic as usual.  Two of my kids have severe allergies and this has done great!

Insomnia:  I have tried Lavender on my wrists, forehead, back of neck, bottom of my feet, and on my pillowcase.  I also diffuse it and inhale it.  I do relax more with lavender, but it has not helped me sleep.  I have recently been using Cedarwood on each big toe.  I do not remember falling asleep 🙂  I also inhale this.  I keep it by my bed.  I’m not fond of the smell, but hey, it works.

Back problems:  PanAway…S.C.O.R.E.

Headaches: I rub peppermint on my temples and on the back of my neck.  I also diffuse it and inhale it.  Headaches are gone within minutes.

Arthritis in knees: Pan Away….knees felt pain free within 10 minutes.

Depression/Stress/Anxiety:  Lemon (diffusing and on wrists).  I also use lavender, stress away, peace & calming, and joy.  All these have done well for me.

Neck Stiffness:  Valor.  I rub it down my neck, focusing on the large bone at the base of my neck.  Works within minutes…plus, as an added bonus…when I turn my head to the right or left, it starts cracking like I’ve been to a chiropractor.  Weird and addictive LOL

Skin Tags:  Frankincense and/or Melaleuca Oil.  I used this on two of my skin tags and they fell off within a week.

Bronchitis/Cold/Pneumonia/Any Sickness:  Thieves.  I love this oil.  I rub it on my feet and diffuse it.  I used it on my 80 year old friend…she had bronchitis.  The last time she had this, she was sick for almost a month.  I diffused it in her house, twice a day.  I also rubbed it on her feet twice a day.  She was better in about 3-4 days.

Smells:  Purification diffused.  Citrus diffused.  Lemon diffused.

Eczema: I have tried lavender, melaleuca, and frankincense…none has cleared up my psoriasis.

Hair Growth:  currently, I rub lavender and cedarwood on my scalp….we shall see if that works.  I just started a couple of days ago.

I will be (or I did) replenishing my stock through Native American Nutritionals and Essential Oil Exchange because it is more cost effective.  Do your homework…I did…these oils are comparable to YL or DoTerra.  Some oils, I will replace through Young Living.  You can get diffusers on Amazon (I caution you on buying oils from amazon).  I also got my rollers from amazon.  I want more diffusers LOL…I also want a diffusing necklace.  Someday…

I will continue to post on what has worked and not worked.  Honesty is the best policy.  If I can get rid of some of our “extra” medications through using something more holistic, I will.  I will not replace my medications that I regularly take!!!

*Disclaimer:  I do not sell Young Living Essential Oils, DoTerra, EOX, or NAN.  I have looked, researched and used my family, as well as, myself as guinea pigs for things that we deal with everyday.  If you have substantial issues with anything that I have listed above, by all means, go to your doctor and seek medical attention.  Do not stop taking your regular medication without consulting a doctor.  Oils should not replace prescribed medication.  I have also not taken ANY oils internally.  All oils are topical, diffused, or inhaled. Read the labels.  If the oil is “hot” then use a carrier oil.  I use olive oil*

  1. Thanks for the info on lavender on the toe nail. I popped my big toe about 3 weeks ago and the nail came off this morning for good. I was looking for the right oil and you answered my question! I love my oils.

  2. My whole toe nail came off completely by someone stepping on and I am guessing twisting by accident. What essential oils did you continue to use as your nail was growing back? Also, there was a corner of my nail that I have had fungus under for a while. So can I include oregano with it?

    1. First off…OUCH. Secondly, be sure and consult with your regular doctor. We used Lavender consistently until it began growing back. Oregano is excellent for fungus be know that it is a “hot oil” so dilute it, heavily, with a carrier oil.
